Over the course of the
summer, through the wonderful world of reading, we will explore a
limitless world of information, entertainment and adventure at your
library - and in books! Purpose of the Summer Reading Program… We want to encourage children to read and use the library resources during the school vacation times to meet their own learning and recreational needs. The experience should be relaxing and pleasurable. For that reason, we downplay "numbers" of books read. "How many" is not nearly as important as "how good". We want children to share books and stories in the company of others and to discover the satisfaction of reading alone or being read to. While the library does not provide formal reading instruction, it does provide numerous opportunities for children and their families to discover the joy of reading. Who can participate in the SRP… Youngsters from toddlers to teens can read books, listen to stories, attend programs and participate in any of the many free programs. Some programs have limited numbers and ages, so look at the schedule for details. A valid library card is needed to check out books, but it is not needed to attend programs.
How the SRP Works….. Children or their read-to-me caregivers, check out library books, read them at their leisure and record the reading time on the reading log provided by the library.
We use two different reading
logs: The reader will receive a treat for each two hours or five books read and a token with their name on it will be placed on the decorated bulletin board. Readers may earn a reading certificate signed by the Governor of Texas, Mr. Rick Perry, after reading four (4) hours or ten (10) books. Read a total of 50 hours or 50 books and receive special recognition and prizes at our end of the summer reading program party!
Please Note… · Story Hour is for children 6 years of age and younger that are able to sit still and listen to stories, sing songs and do a small craft. · Children 10 years of age and younger must be accompanied by a responsible individual 16 years of age or older at all times. · Watch the marquee, the foyer chalkboard, the circulation desk and the website (www.maebrucelibrary.org) for information about each upcoming event. · Please DO save your Big Chief Foods and Sonic Drive-In receipts for the library
